Opera on the North Fork of Long Island? Yes. All summer long, opera events are taking place, some well publicized, others, not. It’s one thing to enjoy opera, quite another to enjoy it in the beautiful bucolic setting of wine country. One of my fondest memories was listening to members of the Opera of the Hamptons performing in the pavilion behind Pindar Winery. It was a hot but clear summer night and the sun was setting just beyond the field of sunflowers as the talented troupe performed aria excerpts from Puccini’s “La Boehme,” in particular, “O Soave Fanciulla.” The amazing music, which has endured through the ages, and the gorgeous setting combine to create an experience the finest opera houses of Europe would be hard pressed to duplicate.
This weekend’s opera at Duckwalk Vineyards honors Dr. Herodotus Damianos, a patron of the arts and a supporter of Opera of the Hamptons from their very first performance. Everyone knew he was a real Opera Lover, and especially fond of the works of Puccini. His influence and love of opera credits him as being one of the North Fork’s earliest supporters of this type of open air opera. Performing at this opera will be the incomparable soprano, “Cristina Fontanelli and Her Fabulous Friends”:”From Opera To Broadway,” Saturday, July 18th 7:00pm-9:30pm. You can get tickets through Brown Paper Tickets : 1-800-838-3006 event 1673300 or http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1673300.
Opera on the North Fork continues with Diliberto Winery hosting their annual Summer Concert Series with two special opera performances on Saturday, July 25 and August 15, both beginning at 7 p.m. The evening will feature performances by international and local performers for a unique North Fork experience. And to let you in on the North Fork’s best kept opera secret, August 2 is the Belle Voci Opera at the Horton’s Point Lighthouse. Attendees of this event, sponsored by the Southold Historical Society are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic dinner as they enjoy opera music in this truly unique setting. The hilly lawn rolls down to the woods where they have a wooden deck which serves as the evening’s stage. The curtain back drop are trees and wild grape vines at the edge of the woods and just to your right, the sun sets beyond the cliffs and over the sound. Behind you is the majestic lighthouse. The lighthouse is located at 3575 Lighthouse Road, Southold, NY. Concert of Opera Music begins at 6pm, tickets are $10 for adults, children under 12 are free. In case of rain, the concert will be performed at the Southold Presbyterian Church, located at 53100 Route 25, Southold, NY.
