North Fork Fall Fun!

September 15, 2017 by QuintessentialsInc

The rich agricultural heritage of the North Fork provides a cornucopia of harvest riches from Spring to Fall.  On land, our numerous farm stands and specialty stores offer fresh produce, baked goods, and specialty items.  At many farms, you can pick your own apples, pears, and pumpkins, select your flowers, plants, and trees, including cutting your own Christmas tree.  Relax with your kids in the corn maze, pony rides, and bouncy houses.  If you’re not a fraidy-cat, experience one of the increasing popular Halloween events.

By sea, catch your fish of the day on one of the fishing boats.  Stock up on clams, scallops, and oysters. Check out these website calendars for things to do on the North Fork of Long Island.

Lavender By the Bay farm is just steps away from Quintessentials Bed and Breakfast and Spa in East Marion on the North Fork. Showcasing a vast field of lavender, this East End of Long Island shop also offers all things lavender, including their famous honey. Cut your own, or buy already cut, fresh or dried lavender. It’s an awesome treat, to see and smell over twenty varieties of lavender, 50,000 plants spread across ten acres. Lavender By the Bay sells all varieties of bath and body products, domestic and imported, soaps, soaks, salts, essential oils, sachets, sprays and even edible treats. Owners and farmers Serge Rozenbaum and his wife Susan are patient, gracious and informative. They give sound advice on how to cultivate lavender and use it. The farm is open 7 days a week, 9am to 5pm, through the end of September. There are so many things you can do with lavender. Here is a simple and refreshing recipe for Lavender Honey Sorbet.

Quintessentials Lavender Honey Sorbet

6 cups water

2 heaping tablespoons fresh Lavender

3 tablespoons Honey

1 cup sugar

(Optional: 2 teaspoons vodka- this keeps the sorbet from freezing too hard if that is a problem with your freezer) Boil sugar and water until sugar dissolves. Chop lavender fine and add to boiling sugar water with honey. Turn off heat, let cool an hour or two. Place in refrigerator until chilled (8 hours or more). Run mixture through a sieve to remove lavender bits, put in ice cream maker for time recommended, for type used. Red and blue food coloring can be mixed to create a lavender hue. Serve with mint sprigs and lavender blossoms.

So remember when booking a room at Quintessentials Bed and Breakfast and Spa, that you are not a only in the heart of wine country, but you are just a few steps away from one of the most amazing lavender farms on the east coast, and you can enjoy live music in the park in the heart of Southold, every Wednesday night, all summer long, Click here for the schedule and to find out more.
